Creating Space for Everyone: Genevieve on Inclusion at Central Creek Park

Apr 20, 2026

At Central Creek Park, inclusion isn’t just a goal—it’s something participants experience every day.

In a recent interview with Autism News Network, Genevieve shared how her role supports individuals of all abilities through therapeutic recreation and community-based programming. While she isn’t directly managing staff or leading every activity, she plays an important role in connecting participants and programs, helping ensure that each individual gets the most out of their experience.

Her approach is highly personalized. Rather than applying one strategy to an entire group, Genevieve focuses on each participant’s unique needs and abilities.

“Everyone has a little bit of different needs,” she explained. “So I try and help out the individual participants more so than the group as a whole.”

This individualized mindset carries through every part of the program—from planning activities to responding to challenges in real time. When participants experience overstimulation, for example, Genevieve takes a supportive and flexible approach. She may talk through what they’re feeling or offer space for them to step away and process before rejoining the group.

Family communication is also a key part of that process. When situations arise, she works closely with parents and guardians to understand the best ways to support each participant moving forward.

At the heart of it all is therapeutic recreation—a concept Genevieve describes in simple, meaningful terms: adapting fun activities so everyone can participate.

“The main purpose… is to make them happy and have fun,” she said.

That philosophy is reflected in the wide range of programs offered at the park, including basketball, bowling, dances, choir, and theater. Events like the annual prom and Inspire Choir stand out as favorites, giving participants opportunities to build confidence, express themselves, and connect with others.

The impact goes beyond the activities themselves. Families and participants regularly share positive feedback, noting improvements in mental health, social skills, and personal growth.

For Genevieve, what makes Central Creek Park truly special is the sense of belonging it creates.

“There is something for everyone out here,” she said. “I love seeing everyone come through and everyone smiling all the time.”

Through thoughtful support, inclusive programming, and a focus on joy, Central Creek Park continues to create a space where individuals of all abilities can thrive.
